422plus Project
The 422plus Project will consider:
- Tolling the US422 Expressway (approximately 25 miles) between US202 and just east of Route 662, plus
- Improvements to the 422 roadway and impacted local roads, plus
- Re-establishing 44 miles of passenger rail along an active freight line owned by Norfolk Southern, between Norristown and Wyomissing
Project Background
Two studies in 2009, the US 422 Master Plan and the R6 Norristown Service Line Extension Study, recommended the need to further study whether tolling the 422 Expressway could fund road improvements to the corridor in order to provide congestion relief and potentially support re-establishing passenger rail on an active freight line.
As part of the US422 Master Plan, 10 potential planning strategies were developed to improve mobility, accessibility, land use, and quality of life along the 422 corridor.
The top 2 ranked strategies by the public highlighted their interest in pursuing transportation improvements. Both of these will be studied as part of the capital improvement plans of the 422plus Project.
